Halloween literally means ” Hallowed Evening” and was previously known in early European celebrations as “All Hallows Eve” with “All Saints Day” on November 1st, both paying homage to the Saints around that time, but the name eventually become one word “Halloween”. The ancient Gaelic festival Samhain seems to be the root of Halloween occurring on this day, with both reasons of the Seasons clearly changing and the observers at this festival would feel and believe the boundaries between this world and the next had become closer than any other time of the year creating more communication between the living and the dead, hence the connotations of this time and places and people being haunted.
Trick or Treat… We all have great memories as children dressing up in fancy dress, knocking on the doors of the neighbours with our parents or guardians standing by the gate whilst we say those words of trick or treat to the locals, and for the ones who answered would usually have a bowl of sweets for the kids to take a hand fall on their travels, and once you got home, you would empty your bag of sweets on the table and eat those lovely treats, Great memories. So we must thank this concept of grabbing candy/sweets originally from the US when it became mainstream in the early 1900’s where families would provide treats to the children to ensure they became immune to any pranks or tricks for the remainder of this holiday period.

Costumes only became really scary when originally the young Scottish and Irish pranksters thought to dress up as scary as possible to evade getting caught when they went around grabbing all of the sweets again and again and with any pranks they did, it would make it harder for them to get in trouble.
