What Was Skinhead Culture & Fashion Back In The Day

May 4, 2022ben nevisUncategorized3 comments

This may take you down memory or if you don’t know and have lived under a rock your whole life the original Skinhead was a member of a sub culture among the working class youth of the 60s in London. Within a few years this spread though out the rest of the UK. Over a decade later in the late 70s the second wave of  this phenomenon traveled across the world, which was motivated by social alienation for the working class and for people to be heard.

Also Known as ‘Skins’, this sub culture had a specific look of close cropped hair or shaven heads, braces, high rise and straight leg jeans, button down shirts with a fitted and checkered pattern, all becoming an iconic look whilst making a huge fashion statement and creating a sub culture that represented a lot more than first thought.

Skins were definitely their own culture but incorporated elements from the MOD fashion and Jamaican music, with rude boy sub culture found among the Jamaican British youths within the poorer neighborhoods. First & second generation skins were also influenced by the rhythms of ska, rocksteady and reggae as well as the American soul and Rhythm & Blues which we still love so much today.

Unfortunately through out the years this culture had a stigma with the public eye associating large portions of this movement as a racial prejudice, but with the love and influences for the Jamaican and American RnB this couldn’t be further from the truth, There is always groups within groups that spoil it for the rest but the skinhead culture was more of a political movement, with statements being made of many years to highlight the inequality against the working class with the gaps getting further away from the upper and middle class no matter the colour or race.

Respect must be shown as its part of the history books and the fashion stands alone. The statements in the fashion world also saw this sub culture don Harrington’s, Donkey jackets, Trilby hats, Flat caps which can be found on our website.
