Emerging in the 70’s the punk ethos was made up of beliefs such as non-conformity, anti-authoritarianism, anti-corporatism, a Do-It-Yourself ethic, anti corporate greed, direct action and not selling out attitude, Which are all very relevant still in 2022 with many issues within the UK and world.
This subculture was a diverse unique form of expression with a wide array of ideologies, fashion, visual art, dance, literature and film. The promoting of individual freedom originated from punk rock, typically enjoying underground, minimalist, iconoclastic and satirical sensibilities, creating poetry and prose.
The punk fashion included t-shirts, leather jackets, Dr Martens, unique hairstyles with brightly coloured spiked mohawks, cosmetics, tattoos, jewelry and body modification symbolizing individuality.
Punk rock music started with the likes of new wave, post-punk, 2 tone, pop punk, hardcore punk, no wave, street punk, oi! hard core punk following this the subculture then influenced other underground music such as alternative rock, indie music crossover and forms of heavy metal with a large movement in the 90’s in America to revive the punk rock scene with the likes of Guns ‘n’ Roses and the Red Hot Chili Peppers creating a new wave in industry.
If we were to use one word to describe punk it would be individuality.
