Soft Shell Jackets have been used by walkers and climbers over the past few years to great effect,  the jackets are pleasant to wear, more breathable than a waterproof, and more water- and wind resistant than a fleece. Its shorter cut not only makes it an ideal replacement for the old style fleece and hard shell for climbing and scrambling this style jacket is ideal for military use in all but extreme down pours. The durable, waterproof, lightweight, breathable fabric contains billions of microscopic pores smaller than a raindrop, but hundred times larger than a molecule of water vapour.  The triple layer combination wicks moisture, stop water from passing through, and circulate body heat.
