Our stand alone store is named after one of the most famous mountains in the world. Ben Nevis is the Highest mountain in Scotland with the summit at 1,345 metres above sea level and is the highest land for 459 miles, seeing the worst sorts of weathers these shores have ever seen. So being an outdoor supplier of winter, safety and wet weather gear, we thought that the Ben Nevis name is well suited and anyone who reaches that peak can do so with pride whilst wearing the correct clothing from us @ Ben Nevis Clothing.
The first recorded ascent of Ben Nevis was made on 19 August 1771 by James Robertson, an Edinburgh botanist, who was in the region to collect botanical specimens. Another early ascent was in 1774 by John Williams, who provided the first account of the mountain’s geological structure.
With over 100,000 accents a year, this is one the most popular activities to attempt in the British isles. Ben Nevis is situated in the west end of the Grampian Mountains in the highland region of Lochaber, close to the town of Fort William. Not many people know but the summit is actually a collapsed dome of an ancient volcano, and Ben Nevis is all that remains of a Devonian Volcano which dates back over 350 million years, so pretty special really.
Technically being part of an old volcano will naturally bring its own dangers, especially anyone who attempts the climb not being prepared or being vigilant. 80% Fog was almost always present at the peaks during the winter periods and still well over 50% in the summer months. Temperatures would be as low as −5 °C in the winter, with the rain fall around Ben Nevis being double the rain fall found at Fort William, so being well equipped is key.
Our outdoor gear will be perfect for these conditions especially our best waterproof, the Keela Munro Jacket is worn by the mountain rescue teams and is a must have for this excursion. Having the best soles on your waterproof footwear is also a must have, Vibram or Michelin soles can go over any terrain and having anti slip properties which is helpful. Kiwi Walking trousers will make the ascent comfortable with their lightweight properties and being made from solar drying fabric helps them dry extra quick. Thorlo socks are made for this environment as is a definite for comfort and warmth, with extra padding in the heel and toe areas. Extremities products are exceptional and will protect you from the elements of Ben Nevis.
Unfortunately Ben Nevis sees several fatalities annually, since humans have climbed this historic mountain, so we always would advise to go with experienced members and with the correct equipment and with current technology being so good now, use a tracker.
Once you’ve completed your mission visit The Ben Nevis Distillery which is a single malt whisky distillery at the foot of the mountain, near Victoria Bridge to the north of Fort William. Founded in 1825 by John McDonald (known as “Long John”), it is one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland.
